Canon’s New A9s LCD Projector

Canon is making it easier to operate its a9s LCD projectors with improved ergonomics and more user-friendly features. The 7.3 lb units offer an easy-to-use command dial on the front handgrip and a simple tab-style menu system.

They show some image retention after displaying static elements for 10 minutes, but the effect dissipates quickly. They also have excellent input lag for PC gaming.

Image Quality

With a native 1920×1080 resolution and 800 ANSI lumens of brightness, the a9s offers a premium image on the big screen. The OriTone perfect color representation and P3 wide color scale ensures an accurate and vivid image. MEMC technology eliminates jittery playback and makes fast-moving content clear.

The a9s does a good job at handling gradients, with only a small amount of banding visible in some colors (especially grays). You can reduce this by setting the Smooth Gradient option to ‘Low’ or ‘Medium’. The ‘High’ setting removes the most banding but might cause a loss of detail in some scenes.

The a9s’ input lag is excellent, comparable to that of high-end 4k TVs. It can display a 1440p @ 60Hz signal, but not a 4k @ 120Hz signal. It can also display chroma 4:4:4 for PC use, but you need to be in the ‘Game’ or ‘Graphics’ Picture Mode and set the HDMI Signal Format to ‘Enhanced format’ for it to work properly. The a9s can also remove judder from most sources when you set the Motionflow or Cinemotion settings to ‘Custom’ and leave the Clarity slider at ‘1’ or ‘2’.

Color Accuracy

The a9s has a very good color accuracy and can easily be used to display high-quality content in LED 4K outdoor projector a home theater setup or for business presentations. It also has a low input lag which is perfect for gaming and can even be used as a PC monitor.

The color accuracy of a projector is important because it reflects how well it creates colors in video. I test a projector’s accuracy by looking at how accurate it is for different saturations of red, green and blue primary colors and for shades of gray, as well as a wide variety of in-between colors and tones. I use the Portrait Displays Calman software to measure how close a projector is to creating a correct image.

The SDR peak brightness of a projector is also important for its ability to overcome ambient light in a room. I measure this using a pattern that includes bright spots of white and black on a dark grey background. I look for a projector that can reach the peak brightness of the pattern without washing out the white or black areas.

Motion Resolve

Viewing Angles

Using a new 0.61 inch SXRD panel Sony has created a projector that is capable of showing UHD content in its native 16:9 shape, avoiding the need for scaling like on older models. This is important as most of today’s home UHD content is delivered in that format.

SXRD panels also deliver a wider viewing angle than the old DCi panels used in previous models. This enables the Sony to be used in home theaters with a wide range of seating positions.

Viewing angles are more critical in a home theater than in a commercial cinema. This is because the size of a home theater screen is less than that of a cinema screen and the viewer’s eyes are closer to the center of the screen. This means that the viewing angles’sweet spot’ moves a lot faster than in a cinema. CEDIA recommendations are based on SMPTE guidance and they recommend that no viewer be more than 15 degrees off axis.

Sound

The a9s’ audio is better than most TV speakers and, if you add a surround system, it could rival top-end home theater components. It has a pair of 5W speakers that get loud without sounding harsh and have a nice range of frequencies. Its only real shortcoming is a lack of low-bass, but you’ll rarely need that in a large room.

It’s easy to find and use all the controls on the a9s, with a dedicated menu dial up front, an arrow on the remote that opens a customizable settings page, a programmable command dial on the back of the handgrip, and a standard locking mode dial on the side. You’ll spend time configuring the a9s to suit your preferences, but it will pay off in the long run.

The a9s’ X-Motion Clarity is more than adequate for gaming, and its input lag is lower than most recent 4K TVs. It also features a ‘Game’ picture mode for automatic recognition of compatible consoles.
